Plant theft on the rise

The Scottish Plant Owners Association (SPOA) would like to draw members’ attention to the important issue of plant and tool theft.

JCB Insurance, a valued Associate Member, has shared information relating to the claims it processed in Q2 2023. The information shows that there were more claims for theft (plant and tool) than anything else, with combined claims totalling over £145,000. Overall, there was an increase of 13.6% in plant theft and damage claims.

As members will recall, the SPOA has partnered with Police Scotland on the Scottish Partnership Against Acquisitive Crime (SPAACE) to raise awareness of plant, fuel and tool theft as well as the important measures plant owners can take to minimise the risk of theft and to protect them financially should they experience theft.

Plant owners are reminded to sign up to Construction Watch Scotland, which will:

·       Alert plant owners to local crimes and emerging trends

·       Offer prevention tactics to protect sites large and small

·       Offer advice on how to secure tools, equipment and plant machinery

·       Provide guidance on how to reduce fuel theft opportunities

·       Highlight approved ‘Secured by Design’ products

·       Share best practice

The SPOA also has helpful advice on theft on its website which can be viewed at https://www.spoa.org.uk/theft.

Plant owners should always have a good quality level of cover for all their needs, and we would always recommend reviewing your cover to ensure you have the right level needed as business needs and responsibilities can change.

Members of the SPOA can access suppliers who provide important business services to plant owners, including insurance, and we would encourage members to make use of this service and review their insurance provisions.
