The current membership of the Executive Committee is as follows:
Office Bearers:
Under the leadership of current President, Callum Mackintosh, changes have been made to ensure the sustainability of the Executive Committee and the Association. Recognising the level of commitment required from office bearers, the Executive Committee has been restructured so that the subgroups now include more members. In addition, the Association has committed to recruiting a full-time member of staff to take on more of the administration so that the Executive Committee can focus on the future and delivering for members.
Speaking about his personal journey with the SPOA and ultimately deciding to stand in 2016, current President Callum Mackintosh said: “I can remember feeling a sense of frustration in the early years of running my business in the Highlands that the SPOA was too focused on the central belt and the older more established firms. I didn’t feel the Association was doing enough to support the variety of member businesses or those starting out and carving their own career in the plant industry.
“I remember giving the Executive Committee at the time a fairly frank assessment and quite rightly he then president suggested I join the committee and put my money where my mouth is. That’s what I did and the rest, as they say, is history.
“We have a solid 5-year strategy, and I firmly believe that securing passionate people to join the Executive Committee is the way to achieve our goals.
“We have recently co-opted Amy Monaghan, a director in the family business Arvill Plant and Tool Hire in Airdrie to the Executive Committee. She was a driving force behind our recent ‘Women in Plant’ event and I would love to see much better representation from women on the Executive Committee. Amy will be officially voted on to the Executive Committee at the 2023 AGM.
“I know that for many the thought of joining the Executive Committee can be daunting and therefore I, along with Vice President, John Sibbald, am more than happy to chat to SPOA members on an informal basis to give them an insight about what to expect.
“We want the Executive Committee to reflect the diversity of our industry so that’s about bringing in some of our members with years of experience who want to give something back, as well as those who are still early on in their career but can see the challenges and opportunities and want to be part of shaping the future of the industry.
“Of course, we are realistic and recognise that this might not be for everyone, the last few years have proven that and that’s OK. It is about what you can put in, not what you can get out of being on the committee, It is about carrying out what is asked of you, it is a time commitment, but it is also a rewarding role. We now have an extremely supportive Executive Committee that works as a team. If we can get new committee members who share our vision, then we can continue to work together delivering on the industry’s needs and further supporting our members.
“As I know from experience, you can’t change things from the sidelines so to those members who want to bring about change in the industry, be part of the decarbonisation journey and create a bright future for young people, then join us on the Executive Committee.”
