Bauma 2022, the world’s leading trade fair for construction, mining, and heavy machinery, was a monumental event that showcased the future of the industry. Held in Munich, the exhibition highlighted cutting-edge innovations that are pushing the boundaries of construction, mining, and road-building machinery. This year’s focus was clearly on electrification, sustainability, and advanced technologies designed to optimize productivity while reducing environmental impact.
This year’s Bauma was a stark contrast to Bauma 2019, with a significant shift in priorities. Everywhere you turned, there were hybrid, electric, or hydrogen-powered machines, but a deeper dive into the stands revealed that manufacturers are also embracing virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) to support service personnel. The scale of the exhibition is always hard to describe, and while this review can only scratch the surface, it highlights some of the key takeaways from Bauma 2022.
Mecalac turned heads with its prototype REVOTRUCK, a machine boasting four-wheel steering, an oscillating chassis, a fully rotating cabin, and an impressive 9-tonne payload. This revolutionary design prioritizes operator accessibility and maintenance simplicity, setting new standards for usability. The REVOTRUCK has generated significant buzz, and we eagerly await the chance to test it hands-on.
Hyundai made a strong impression with its latest range of large-scale excavators, led by the HX380 L Crawler Excavator. This machine combines powerful performance with exceptional fuel efficiency, making it ideal for heavy-duty operations. It features a responsive hydraulic system and a robust engine that minimizes fuel consumption while maintaining peak productivity.
Adding to its innovations, Hyundai showcased its Hi-MATE telematics system, which enables real-time machine diagnostics, remote monitoring, and predictive maintenance. These features improve operational efficiency, maximize uptime, and reduce maintenance costs, making it a valuable addition to modern construction fleets.
SANY continued its rapid growth, unveiling machines for both construction and mining. The compact SY19E Mini Excavator runs on battery power, delivering zero-emission performance and quiet operation, ideal for urban and sensitive environments.
SANY also introduced its new telehandler range, starting with the STH1440 and STH1840. These machines feature German-inspired designs and prioritize safety, comfort, and ease of use. The flagship SY980H Crawler Excavator, a 90-tonne workhorse, exemplified the company’s focus on power, efficiency, and advanced controls through the SANYi Touch system.
Hitachi demonstrated its commitment to sustainability with its ZX23U-6EB, ZX55U-6EB, ZX85US-6EB, and ZX135-7EB fully electric excavators. These machines are ideal for urban worksites, offering quiet operation and zero emissions without compromising performance.
The new ZX95W-7 Compact Wheeled Excavator also made its debut. This model, developed in partnership with Mecalac, features two or four-wheel steering and a short turning radius, making it perfect for confined spaces.
Wacker Neuson impressed with the latest iteration of its Dual View Dumper, now featuring a fully rotating cabin. This enhancement offers greater practicality, enabling the operator to exit the cab regardless of its orientation. The new cabin design can also automatically align with the direction of travel, streamlining operations.
In addition, Wacker Neuson demonstrated an app-controlled reversible compaction plate, showcasing intuitive controls and three distinct operational styles. This innovation highlights the potential for autonomous compactors to further transform the industry.
Kubota previewed an array of hybrid and electric excavators alongside two prototype electric wheeled loaders. While still in development, these machines underscore Kubota’s commitment to maintaining its position as a market leader in compact machinery. True to its reputation, the brand plans to perfect these models before their eventual release.
The Wirtgen Group, now owned by John Deere hosted an impressive exhibit that underscored its commitment to sustainable road construction. Vögele introduced the SUPER 2000-3i Paver, which leverages automation to enhance paving precision and reduce material waste. New to the lineup are the MINI 500 tracked paver and the MINI 502 wheeled model, available in both diesel and electric versions. These compact pavers are ideal for small-scale projects such as footpaths, cycle tracks, and narrow ditches.
Meanwhile, Hamm showcased the HD+ 140i VV Oscillatory Roller and the new electric HD12e tandem roller, the latter presented with an interactive X-ray-style display to illustrate its internal workings. Kleemann unveiled the MOBIREX MR 130i PRO, a mobile impact crusher designed to balance energy efficiency with high throughput.
